Modern technology means that even Reading and Language Arts teachers like myself are using electronic dictionaries to look up words more often than paper dictionaries. These resources help the students in classwork and on exams more quickly, have a wide selection of words, and take up less space in busy classrooms. I can't deny that dictionary skills should be learned, but our technological advancement has made information readily available at your fingertips, and this is part of the environment in which students must learn every day, too. When faced with a shelf full of hefty dictionaries and thesauri, they quickly turn to the teacher to ask if we don't have any electronic dictionaries. They ask if they may ask their virtual assistant program. They ask if they may Google the definition of the word they need to know. None of these are options on the STAAR test, though, while electronic dictionaries such as these are acceptable and just about as easy to use.
