Learning reading strategies and skills through engaging and quality literature is so much more engaging, motivational, and beneficial than just reading the textbook! Each day my students and I will read together from a novel. As we read, I will use the novels to help them learn new literacy skills, practice reading comprehension strategies, and make connections and build background knowledge. Reading from novels, as opposed to the short stories in a reading textbook, also enhances the students’ critical thinking skills by diving deep with character and plot development. Unfortunately, we are seeing less and less critical thinking focused activities in the current “test-prep” atmosphere in schools. Several of the titles I have chosen also have the added benefit of really being able to tap into the students' empathy and awareness. By reading books like Wonder and The One and Only Ivan, students can learn about how people learn to live and excel despite disabilities or other challenges.
