My 7th grade students are about to begin their first novel study for the year! Due to the current pandemic, each student will need their own copy of the text. To begin the third quarter, my grade-level students are going to read Tina Athaide's historical fiction novel "Orange for the Sunset". This historical story will help my students learn more about Idi Amin’s decision to expel Indians from Uganda in 1972. I am excited to have my students explore the multiple social justice issues and powerful themes discussed in the novel. My honors students will begin Nat Hentoff's novel "The Day They Came to Arrest the Book". This rigorous novel will help students formulate their own opinions on censorship in schools and springboard our argumentative writing unit.
