Working with clay is fundamental to a well-rounded elementary art education. Many of us remember the moment when we, as children, presented a perhaps lumpy and oddly-shaped ceramic vessel to an adult proudly proclaiming, "I made this!" The tactile learning that occurs when one has the opportunity to shape and mold clay is singular and allows students who may struggle technically in areas like drawing or painting to find success. I want my students to know the joy of feeling wet clay between their fingers. Working with clay improves spatial understanding and offers rich integrated learning opportunities with subjects such as science and history. Whether rolling out coils for a coil pot or pinching the clay into the shape of a vessel, the tradition of ceramics is ancient and connects students to generations of people and cultures that have come before us. Many artworks created throughout the school year are created on paper. Due to their delicacy, those works rarely stand the test of time. The longevity of a completed ceramic project resonates with children. They feel the pride and validation of creating something that has the potential to last.
