A preschool student that I see is working on using picture symbols to communicate. She is very bright and has a lot to say, but her disability interferes with her getting her ideas across. When she is older, she would be a great candidate for a voice generating device, but as a preschooler she will have to "build up" the skills needed to use one effectively. These include fine motor development and learning to initiate communication. A iPad will provide her with apps that are appropriate for her current skill level, along with speech generating capabilities that will greatly boost her motivation. For most of her life, the adults around her have always assumed what she needed or wanted. Learning to use a device will give her the power to speak for herself.
