Each night I assign my class a news article. One of the articles discussed alternative seating options and its link to student achievement. My class was really interested in if flexible seating really did have an effect on student achievement. I thought that this would be the perfect way to incorporate Project Based Learning into the classroom because many of my kiddos have a hard time staying seated and still throughout the school day. The Wobble Cushions and Chairs and Rocker Chairs would allow my students who seem to have 'ants in their pants' an opportunity make an appropriate seating choice that allows them to rid themselves of excess energy while still participating in the learning experience without distracting others. The seat cushions would allow students who need tactile stimulation without movement an opportunity to satisfy those sensory-based needs while meeting their academic goals as well. In addition to adding an extra level of comfort to our classroom we would also be conducting research to determine if alternate seating choices do in fact improve academic achievement. If the research is correct, being able to utilize alternative seating options would not only improve student achievement, but it would also give my students a first hand account on conducting a research experiment and analyzing the data. We've already formed a hypothesis, discussed participants, materials, consent, dependent and independent variables, and how to analyze and explain the data. More importantly, if we conduct this research by starting out with the students in our class and we see that alternative seating does improve student achievement, we can present our findings to the teachers and staff at our school in hopes that they may consider offering their students alternative seating options.
