My students come from very diverse backgrounds and have many different unique learning needs and challenges due to their disabilities. These challenges have led to some of my students developing a resistance to reading and learning through books and literature. If there is anything I want my students to leave my classroom understanding, its that they CAN learn to read and that they are not alone in their challenges. I want to rebuild my classroom library to help instill a love of reading in my students. The more my students read, the easier it becomes for them, but just as important, they need to enjoy reading. I want to be able to provide them with books whose characters look like them, have some of the same thoughts and feelings as they do, and reflect their families, cultural traditions, and other students around them. I believe this will motivate them to want to read more and enrich their reading experience. Additionally, some of my students do not have a cozy, safe space to read at home. Creating that space in the classroom with COVID precautions has been challenging, but along with the books I am requesting, with more individualized reclining seats, I can provide them with a welcoming place to read independently or as a group, so we can continue to learn and grow together.
