First grade is an amazing grade level where students build up their reading capabilities and truly become their own person and learner. An important skills students need is the ability to locate words and their definitions. By having the ability to locate words and their definitions, students will build upon their vocabulary and language. Throughout our Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies lessons, students often do not know the meaning of words and this would be a great tool to not only build up their researching capabilities, but build up their vocabulary. Also, many of my students have a hard time focusing, are fidgety, and need some type of movement to get their brains flowing. Fidget seating options would help my students stay on task and focus. As they are completing work they can balance themselves on a bubble cushion or kick their legs on a chair band. This would ultimately give them the advantage of moving while their working without disrupting themselves or the class.
