My 7th grade English students create projects throughout the year to connect outside examples and personal experiences to the fiction & non-fiction readings in class. Our students just received iPads to help with instruction during the pandemic. Having another computer screen will help me manage the work flow of our digital work, especially our multimedia projects. With Zoom and distance learning, students have used shared documents and breakout rooms to collaborate. This month, students are connecting an article about greatness to their own favorite activities, from art to yo-yo competition. They include examples and videos from experts as well as from their own photos and videos. For instance, some students who discovered baking, jewelry-making, and other pandemic hobbies shared experiences to create their projects. Later on in the term, they will choose among nine projects connecting "A Christmas Carol" to such areas as outreach for the poor, multicultural holiday traditions, or modern day settings. Some will write original songs focusing on an aspect of character or theme. Other projects compare tap to bottled water and analyze the benefits and drawbacks of space exploration and colonies. The year ends with small group Decades Projects presented in full costume with soundtracks and research on key historic and cultural events of the twentieth century. Having the extra screen will help me to guide my students through these collaborative projects. I can have lots of screens open whether we are on hybrid learning or on Zoom. Giving them personalized feedback helps me reach out to them to help them produce the best work possible. Two screens will assist me as I guide students to integrate these new devices in ways that build a stronger sense of class community.
