Children who are subjected to ongoing neglect, abuse, and parental incarceration are predisposed to learning and behavior problems.* The items I have requested will improve learning and behavior in these children by enhancing the experience of a multi sensory environment created to help them cope with stress and anxiety assoicated with trauma through stimulation of the senses. When the social and emotional needs of students are supported, only then are they primed to develop the appropriate learning behaviors and skills needed to succeed in the classroom and in life. To do this, I created the Peace Garden - a place for students to go to help manage stress and anxiety assoicated with trauma and to practice mindfulness. This multi sensory space promotes visual stimulation by the use of LED lights and tactile stimulation by use of an inflatable chair and a soft, furry rug. The requested water fountain will emit soothing sounds for auditory stimulation, and the requested aromatherapy items will provide comforting scents. The fidget toys will furnish additional tactile stimulation and be available for use during our meetings together. Students will have the opportunity to be rewarded for meeting behavior goals with a choice of fidget to have to use in the classroom and at home. Along with the posters that are already in place to teach students how to practice mindfulness, the building block toys will further enhance tactitle stimulation and promote a mindful setting . *Hanlon, Thomas E et al. “Research on the Caretaking of Children of Incarcerated Parents: Findings and Their Service Delivery Implications.” Children and youth services review vol. 29,3 (2007)
