Once a week, teams of third, fourth, and fifth graders gather in the library during their lunch period with one goal in my mind - to read and explore new books in their quest to become Battle of the Books champions. They discuss the books with the passion of seasoned book club members. They brainstorm questions based on the details in each chapter, and quiz one another until they know each book inside and out. Our team sizes have exploded this year and I just don't have the funds to provide each child with their own copy of the books. This project will enable the children to explore the books at home, as well as at school, and enjoy the experience of reading and re-reading a beautiful story at their own pace. At the conclusion of Battle of the Books, all of the books become a permanent part of our library collection to be read by students for years to come.
