Being a school social worker, so much of what I do is work with the school in its entirety. It is crucial that all of our students and staff have access to materials and items that will help meet sensory needs as well as to promote social/emotional learning. At our school we have a large population of students who have a wide range of disabilities, have experienced traumas, live in single parent households, and are in need of skills for emotional regulation. Items such as the sensory boxes for classrooms, flexible seating stools, sensory circles, breathing ball, and drawing tablet will help to increase our ability to continue to address these needs. Some of these items can also be sent home for students during remote learning as they need them.
