The year 2020 has monumentally disrupted our lives, but most especially the most vulnerable among us--our children. What started out as spring break in our district became a long summer and fall of uncertainty and fear. The social and emotional upheavals in our children's lives--especially my special needs students--have to be addressed with the same effort as their academic goals. By providing them these beautifully illustrated and written books and hands-on toys (as opposed to virtual games), I can target language, reading and writing skills, as well as social and emotional issues. My students need incentives (or reinforcers) to encourage them to accomplish their daily tasks. One of my online students enjoys pizza delivery after completing his success chart. Others work for various toys, including Beyblades, Pokemon cards, Marvel Superhero action figures, slime, costumes, and crafts. Others are train afficionados inspired by book The Polar Express. Being able to play with toy trains after reading stories serve as incentives. Providing my school@home and on-campus students toys give them opportunities for social connection and collaboration they so need in our socially distanced world. These reinforcers also provide students the chance to recreate and reinvent the stories they read with their imagination and creativity. They are encouraged to play, think, speak, dream, create, act and write out their own stories. Through the power of storytelling, my students can begin to negotiate, understand, and transform their fears, anxieties, challenges and worries, and emerge stronger from this pandemic.
