These sensory materials are a great benefit because they build "nerve connections in the brain's pathway, which lead to the child's ability to complete more complex learning tasks." These materials will be used in a sensory room at the school to support "language development, cognitive growth, fine motor and gross motor skills, problem solving and social interaction.” Additionally, the items selected will play an important role in calming the over-stimulated and frustrated scholar so they can continue learning at school after having time in the sensory room instead of having to go home. Our exceptional scholars will be provided the tools to have a complete day of learning everyday like their non-disabled peers. Objective: Students will explore and understand static balance and coordination to increase focus and academic tasks. Students will participate in this activity daily for 30 min. after breakfast. Activity: Students will find a spot in the room to perform a balance. Different balance to use: stand on balance board, lay on balance board and read a book, sit on balance ball, stand on one leg-write name in journal, sit on bean bag and write how each spot makes them feel that day in the journal. Teacher will dim lights with therapeutic colors. Teacher will play calming music and ask students to rotate around the room and journal their sensory tour as the music play. When the music stop students will rotate to another spot to perform a different balance.
