I am requesting funds to attend a virtual conference hosted by Breathe for Change. This is an organization that facilitates the well-being of educators and students through education in yoga, mindfulness, and social and emotional learning. I would like to incorporate these practices into my classroom in order to foster an environment that promotes a compassionate school community. Students in my classes have shared that mindfulness has taught them how to use their breath to calm their minds and bodies and feel more thankful and confident in their abilities to be okay, even through difficult feelings. One student shared, "When I am mindful, I breathe and think of something. I sometimes get angry and I pause, breathe and smile and think about emojis and puppies." Students learning how to become aware of their emotions, accept them non judgmentally, gives them the power to build resilience, confidence, and compassion for themselves and others. This training also allows for me to lead wellness experiences and social and emotional lessons for staff. In order for educators to foster the social and emotional development of their students, they must embody the practice for themselves. Our regulated nervous system is the best intervention for our students. We set the tone in our classrooms and in order for the optimal learning environment to be present, we need to have our own set of tools to manage our emotions. My growth as an educator is life long and I embrace the opportunity to continue my journey and look forward to sharing with others.
