The benefits of composting include enriching the soil and helping soil hold moisture. It reduces the amount of diseases and pests, the need for chemical fertilizers, and the amount of food waste in a household. Worms have a digestive system that is specialized to convert food into vermicast that have 40% more humus (rich, nutrient filled material) than regular compost. Vermiculture encourages the production of good bacteria and fungi. Students will determine what items make compost best and how long it takes for materials to break down. The trays requested allow students to get a cross section view of the decomposition taking place. The vermicast will be used to fertilize our milkweed seed germination/butterfly garden project from September in preparation for March metamorphosis.
