In addition to teaching academic musical concepts like note reading, form, and style, these ukuleles will also be used to teach growth mindset, relationship building, and cultural connections. The ukulele is an excellent instrument for my young musicians because the strings are pliable, the instrument is smaller in size, and produces a soothing timbre. Just think, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" as performed by Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole and imagine the power that sound has to heal, uplift, and inspire. Learning to play the ukulele will give my students a rich, hands-on, musical experience that incorporates both melody and harmony, taking them beyond the limits of classroom percussion instruments. My students will be able to easily accompany themselves, giving them positive audial feedback and a motivation to continue to learn. By engaging kids in music, we help the whole child blossom in mind and spirit in ways that will last a lifetime.
