My students enter my classroom on different reading levels. Some do not like reading, but are "forced" to so they can make it to an accelerated reading party. Putting a focus on points instead of the enjoyment of reading has really made students hate reading. I told my students we are NOT doing parties, celebrations, etc. based on points. When they go to the library they are required to check out a chapter book and a book of their choice. It can be a graphic novel, picture book, etc. They love picture books. That is why I want to add to my classroom library a variety of books including picture books. Most students are reading for pleasure now!
