The reading instructions for this year is a journey through multiple cultures and the history that makes each culture unique and strong. My 5th-grade students will begin the year with a study of African Americans in the Underground Railroad. They continue with the struggle of Asian families entering the western United States in the early 1900s. The school year culminates with a study of Esperanza Rising. After learning about other populations our students are ready to see their struggles reflected through Esperanza's eyes. They recognize their own families, their own history through Esperanza. They see the hope that rises within us all when we find strength in each other!
