Students thrive when they are given opportunities to explore their creativity and goofiness through play. Through the stress of COVID-19 and without the support of "regular" school from March-August, many students are struggling with new barriers and are overcoming new obstacles. To promote social distancing and safe learning, I will be holding small counseling groups for my students on a variety of topics including changing families (divorce, separation, foster care, etc), grief, social skills, and self awareness, among other topics. Julia Cook has written many books that provide excellent examples and fun learning opportunities for students, and I am looking to expand my library for bibliotherapy. Play is to a child as words are to an adult. To increase self and social awareness among the children at my school, I will be using play therapy approaches and mindfulness techniques. To achieve this goal, I will also be working with students on how to identify their own emotions and their peers' emotions. The games will give students a new way to learn and will promote social interaction and awareness as they work together to learn about a variety of topics.
