The students I serve for speech and language therapy come from low-income high poverty homes. They have limited exposure to a varied vocabulary that students from middle or high-income homes are exposed to. I like to vary my materials used in therapy to broaden their exposure to new words and experiences they will not receive at home. I also like to make therapy fun so the students are willing to come and work on things that are difficult for them. When they work extra hard during a session, they are rewarded with games or activities that focus on turn-taking, memory, or social communication skills as well.
