These books are not available through the district library but they are of high interest to our students. The books are specifically targeted to urban youth who may not relate well to other texts. The books are the focus texts on examing social justice and racial inequalities within American communities. Parents need to know that Nic Stone's Dear Martin tells the story of an Ivy League-bound African-American student named Justyce who becomes a victim of racial profiling. He struggles to reconcile the fact that he's a "good kid" with suddenly being in police handcuffs - www.commonsensemedia.org Objective: Students will be able to write a persuasive multi-paragraph essay that argues that Black culture is a subculture of American culture and that it does (or does) not have an impact on the American Experience.
