Liberty Junior High promotes self-selected reading and my campus library is happy to help provide resources. So many students don't enjoy reading but have found success and enjoyment with graphic novels. This is reflected in the high circulation rates of our graphic collection and the popularity among my students of the newest titles that are being published. I have found that a graphic novel is effective for "hooking" hi/low readers, reluctant readers, special education students, English language learners and newcomers as many of them struggle to enjoy reading. Maya Angelou says, “Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuous needs, is good for him.” Our budget for physical books this year has been reduced to help provide more electronic offerings for virtual learning. I still have students who need physical books in their hands, especially graphic style literature.
