Living is a small mountain town where the population is primarily white middle class students can be isolating and feel like you're living in the bubble. As my sixth grade students came back this winter to now "virtual" school, they were full of questions and opinions about our tumultuous times. They had been at home more, online more, and had been exposed to the plight of others and asked how they could help. We have focused our lessons around learning about the biases of other races and cultures in the U.S. and beyond. They even explored their own biases which was an eye opener for many of these 12 year olds. They discussed, they debated and they continue to grow as compassionate humans. To help me keep this fire for knowledge and understanding burning in my students, I would like to start book clubs that allow them to further explore the five areas of justice which were chosen by them, LGBTQ, Black Lives Matter, Immigrants, Disabilities and Environment. Attached you will find the Social Justice Library in which they were given time to explore before voting on the chosen books for this project. They are heavily invested in this Project and can't wait to start reading.
