Because we have very limited funding, if any, for the arts my students have had no experience with other forms of art that don't require paper. I want to give them a new creative experience with a potter's wheel and the feel of wet clay in their hands. In preparation for the project, students will research the history of pottery and then decide on an element of nature that they want to express in their pottery. Using the potter's wheel, they will create a bowl and then use an art technique of imprinting symbols from nature onto the bowl. When choosing the symbols from nature, students will brainstorm what message or idea they hope to convey through their creation. Pottery and poetry will merge in this project as students create nature- inspired poems ; that convey a specific message of conservation and preservation of all things beautiful.
