Emergent literacy is universal. My students with significant intellectual disabilities must be taught to read and write. My project will provide more opportunities for my students to learn emergent literacy skills. It is my job as an educator to ensure all my students have access to the typical experiences that lay the foundation for learning. Learning to read includes learning phonological awareness and learning sight words in balance. Being able to provide read alouds to model rhyming will help lay the foundation that my students need to become readers. Learning to read and write will prepare them for a successful future in advocating for themselves, independently sharing their ideas, connecting with others, and being employed!
