At our school we teach children how to read using a curriculum called "Reading Workshop". This model is designed to allow the children a chance to spend a good amount of time reading every day, we read as a whole class, we read in groups, the children partner read, and they read independently. One of the first steps in Reading Workshop is using Emergent stories, we call these ‘STAR’ books, these are stories most children are a little familiar with, they have characters that the children can recognize (3 Little Pigs, Goldilocks, Jack & the Beanstalk). They also have ‘repeating’ words, which are words that we hear again and again throughout the story. This helps us remember the story and allows us to retell it over and over. Using these books allows the kids to get familiar with books, how to handle books, how to talk about books. I am asking for class sets of some of these stories so that each child can have a copy of the stories we are using to practice and enhance their reading skills. Having these books in our classroom would really allow for my students to kick off their reading journey in a literacy rich environment, and allow each child a chance to get to know books, and hopefully learn to love reading!
