Engaging books and stories are the foundation to creating a lifelong love of reading. Students need access to the books and they need to be able to take them home to read, think, and write about their thoughts and feelings as they experience the story. I am requesting individual books my students will read at home. This will spark deep and meaningful classroom discussions about race, power, and justice. Reading as a community is so important in the process of developing students who will make a difference in the lives of others. These books will spark interests and fuel the fire to create change in the world as students read about the struggles of a young man their own age. The books will bring up important conversations surrounding racism and abuse of power. Students will also have the opportunity to have a discussion with our school resource officer and people of color who can share their personal experiences as they relate to the story.
