In English, one thing we strive for is to capture the minds of every reader. Together with my team of junior teachers, I am building a library of enough books to create a unit called "Literature Circles: Coming of Age." We are looking for stories by authors with unique perspectives, as well as stories our students can find themselves in or relate to on a level they haven't been able to yet. This unit is aimed at providing opportunities for our students to view literature as windows and mirrors; they will get to read the voices that are reflected in their communities and they will be able to develop multiple perspectives as they engage with the world around them. With a class set of the book When They Call you a Terrorist, students will be able to choose this contemporary novel among a list of a few other options. In this unit, students will read literature that contains important themes of mental health, growing up surrounded by bias and prejudice, and finding oneself. This unit is about what students are going through or thinking about right now. We need new, modern novels to reflect the changing and multicultural world students are a part of. Reading has to be REAL to them. The creation of Literature Circles is also an excellent learning process for students that will prepare them for education settings beyond high school. This unit will occur towards the end of the school year when our juniors are ready for this kind of self-direction, choice, and freedom. They'll be able to choose their book, group, reading schedule, and focus. We hope to encourage their leadership skills within an environment where accountability is just as important as curiosity and excitement.
