From my own experience as an artist and ceramics teacher, I believe that very few art mediums kindle growth and skills in students in the way that clay does. I have witnessed firsthand how valuable the experience of working with clay is for sensory development, motor skills, self esteem, self expression, problem solving skills, discipline, and pride. Clay also has a uniquely therapeutic quality that I have seen settle and calm children; it retains their attention for hours! Working with clay increases dexterity and fine motor skills. It creates situations where students problem solve in alternative ways. Clay gives students a chance to work from a 2-dimensional concept and turn it into a 3-dimensional product. You can reach students who are impulsive and those who are planners. In order to work with clay, a kiln is needed. Kilns can be used for years and years, they are fantastic investments and will give the students a chance to explore a medium that they haven't had a chance to explore yet.
