There is an old adage that we have all heard before, but I want to take the liberty to change it a bit to fit our current circumstances: All work and no play makes for a dull day. Our students have returned to school in two cohorts. For the two days a week our students are here they eat breakfast and lunch while in their seats. They do their math, reading, writing, science, social studies and phonics while in their seats. They even have their Encore teachers come to the regular classroom and teach the students in... you guessed it! Their seats. Of course things are different everywhere because of Covid19 but I am truly amazed daily by the patience our students are showing with the changes in their school routine. The one time they can have some freedom is during recess. Even that is restricted by social distancing and the playground equipment is off limits to prohibit the spread of germs. I would like for our students to have an assigned set of recess equipment so they could feel empowered to investigate and formulate new ways to play and explore. This equipment will encourage the sense of wonder that our students display when given the freedom to use their imaginations. It will also make the school day much less dull and full of the possibilities we want our students to experience. All of the hoops, balls and other equipment selected can easily be disinfected and prepared for the next cohort of students to enjoy. On that glorious day when our children can run and play freely without being six feet apart, this equipment will continue to be used as a portal for unencumbered, experimental play and enjoyment.
