With the recent pandemic of Covid-19 and all of the changes that have occurred and continue to change and affect a normal Kindergarten Classroom, it would be beneficial to have individual, hands-on manipulatives for each student. As a kindergarten teacher who will be in the classroom, I want my children to enjoy their time here and be able to play with each other in a way that may not be the norm. We are a class that usually participates in free play and guided play. I do not want to eliminate the value of free play and see its effect on their social and emotional well-being. Research shows that free play is necessary for healthy development and can boost certain skills in early childhood. Having these individual bins with personal items will allow my students to continue to express their creativity, be intuitive, and socialize safely, but it will also assist them in certain academic areas. In our citizenship unit, students discuss working together and working alone. We do lots of activities that support both ways that we can work. Although they will not be sharing, they will be able to take turns and work together to build structures, create scenes, understand and be able to explain the importance of communicating to accomplish a goal. Children need to be pointed toward the relevant dimensions of a problem if they are to learn. Many of the items that I am asking for will also build on their fine motor skills. Building up small muscles in hands and thumb will allow for students to complete important tasks such as writing, grasping, feeding, zipping/buttoning. The items I am asking for, are all tactile examples of practices that facilitate fine motor development. This project will support the many needs of a Kindergartener.
