When I think back to Kindergarten, I'm reminded of haphazardly stacked, cardboard-brick houses built with small, careful hands; woven hats flopped over playful eyes, tickling the bridges of scrunched-up noses; feet swimming in over-sized cowboy boots or jewel-encrusted kitten-heeled sandals; feasts of plastic cereal, wooden milk, rubber fruits, and felt sweets; and serious contemplation over who was to be, "mommy", "daddy", "baby", and occasionally, "doggie". When you reminisce on your days in Kindergarten, what memories are you greeted by? I'll bet many of you recall some instance of play with great fondness. That's because play is at the heart of Kindergarten. Play is an integral element of child development. It promotes imagination, creativity, problem solving, and executive functioning skills like cognitive flexibility, emotional regulation, and working memory. It's in play that children develop dispositions to listen and learn, build community, foster empathetic hearts and minds, and become thinkers and leaders. With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, play will have to look a little different this year. That doesn't mean it should be any less engaging or memorable. As it stands, our Kinder team doesn't have access to enough high-quality materials to sustain meaningful play experiences for our students. Help me give my students the gift of a fond memory rooted in the wonders of play. We know their twinkling eyes and bright smiles will be well worth it.
