All teachers in our school district are now teaching via distance learning online through Zoom. Students benefit from having a variety of resources shared with them using a document camera. With a document camera attached to a computer, students are able to view a variety of teaching materials. For example, we can read books and articles together, complete assignments in our workbooks, share pictures and other realia to support learning through Zoom. A document camera (aka a book and document scanner) allows students to see a visual of what we are learning about in class on their Chromebooks and it helps significantly with student engagement. That old saying is still true, "a picture is worth a thousand words!" This is a very important piece of technology in every classroom. Currently in Language Arts (reading) and Social Studies, we are reading a text entitled Government for the People. Our unit's Essential Question is, Why do people participate in govenment? We have read about the lives of many important people in our nation's history. This list includes: Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Alice Paul (a suffragist), Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Cesar Charvez, and Thomas Paine. My students have really enjoyed our reading and have learned so much about being a positive influence for change in their community and participating in government.
