The materials I have chosen aim to help children explore the creativity of the world as well as develop fine motor skills. Fiber and ceramic art provide an opportunity for children to think differently about art by taking it off the page and into their hands. This transition off the page engages the student's critical thinking and problem solving skills as they adjust their thinking to three dimensions. My students will use weaving looms and yarn as well as clay and fabric to make projects that connect them to traditions around the world. The integration of cultural studies and art provides a deeper understanding of the lives of children in different countries by showing children how similar we all are. Hands on experience with a variety of artistic mediums initiate student thinking about the engineering of products they may take for granted such as a bookbag or a coffee cup. Working with fiber and ceramic art forces the students to think about the strength and durability of their work. What kind of clay we use dictates how the art can be used and handled. STEM activities such as planning and re-engineering can be integrated into a lesson to enhance student understanding of real world problems.
