Currently, the 6:1:1 classroom at Saranac Lake Central Schools does not have a tailored curriculum guided for students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. As mentioned before, individuals with autism spectrum disorder learn in a very different capacity than their neurotypical peers. Individuals with autism are visual learners who often think and learn in images. If we were awarded this grant, then a portion of the grant would be spent on purchasing appropriate curriculum that allows the student to gain knowledge that is tailored to their learning styles and enhances their academic experience. The curriculum that I am looking to purchase is for both academic success and to build upon life skills and social skills. Another area that needs improvement within this 6:1:1 classroom is access to various sensory tools and toys. We do not currently have enough for each student to have their own sensory tools due to COVID restrictions and sharing protocols. I would also like to enhance our sensory area within the classroom to help when students are overstimulated. Sensory tools and toys can be used to also improve the students both fine and gross motor skills. I plan to work on improving those skills as well throughout our day.
