In a special year like this, more than ever, my students need to feel safe and comfortable about their own identity while also learn to be empathetic and connected to other cultures. These books will be used for read-alouds during Zoom meetings and pre-recorded video lessons to send out to families. The diverse characters in these stories will open up my students' minds to the world outside of their home. Representation matters: It is important for students to see themselves in books and to see a variety of individuals from different backgrounds. At a very young age, children recognize the people in their house, their neighborhood, their schools, at the grocery stores, and in the media - what is on TV, commercials, on the shelves at Target. I want to provide opportunities to learn about other cultures.
