The students I work with have disabilities ranging from severe Autism to Oppositional Defiance Disorder to ADHD to Specific Learning Disability. The age group is 12-18 right now. All want to learn and use tools that will ease their anxiety and help them succeed. Being in a small school means that more eyes are on those who struggle to learn, and often times, these students struggle with anxiety and pressure to perform to the ability of their peers which means that they need a break from that pressure. As the special education teacher, I feel it is important for students to be able to get their wiggles out and use their brains in a different way rather than doing coursework all day long. I would like to provide rewards such as playing with various manipulatives and giving them a chance to sit on a different type of seat, especially if they struggle to sit in a regular desk. In addition, I would love for my students to get a break from their busy schedules while also learning different skills that come with hands on activities. Lastly, these students often find themselves stressed about work at home on the ranch or farm in addition to school work. Providing more opportunities for them to learn in a stress-free environment will ensure that their basic needs are met which in-turn sets them up for bigger success in the regular classroom.
