It is no secret that reading opens doors to a world of possibilities. I want help gifting my students a chance to engage in reading in a fun way by cultivating a classroom library where they can see themselves (relate) to the books. My students often think reading is not fun or interesting because they do not have resources or access to books that reflects their interests. For instance, so many of my students love books about kids their own age, but often books offered to them are about people living experiences that seem out of touch with their identities and interests. Middle school is so important for development and identity. Providing them with an avenue that allows them to engage in academics but also explore who they are is vital in a middle school reading classroom. I want them to learn to love reading because they are reading books that are mirror and windows for them to learn about others and themselves.
