Our classroom is currently split among in-person and virtual students, both learning simultaneously. Technology, of course, can be our best friend and our worst enemy in these times, and teachers at our school struggle with old hardware. Using a second device would allow me to engage students more deeply, through additional modalities. For example, using the iPad while in a Google Meeting opens new opportunities for presenting apps that my current devices don't have bandwidth to open while in a video call. Using an iPad, I can operate and present Peardeck, Padlets, Kahoots, and other highly interactive websites while streaming. I'll also be able to use it as a document camera for read alouds and manipulative demonstrations, as my current document camera cannot connect to computers. I'll be able to use certain apps, such as Jamboard and Braining Camp, to their full capacity by writing on the iPad with the stylus as though on a whiteboard. In addition, having a second screen will allow me to be able to see more of my students through Google Meets (which only shows a limited number of student faces on one screen), and thus, be able to more reliably use the camera as an interactive and student support tool. Technology's been tricky this year, for sure, and while we're all doing what we can to navigate the virtual new normal, sometimes our hardware is a few years behind. When we can relieve some stress of challenging technology, we're able to focus more of our personal, human bandwidth on academic support, and community connection. That is my hope with the iPad and Stylus.
