We start our understanding in a conceptually way. Learning and understanding that there is more than one way to solve any type of problem. We typically start out by working with our groups and on small whiteboards. Once we understand the path that is going to best get us to the answer it typically involves the need of a calculator beyond the basic numbers and operations. Currently in my class I have a wide array of half working calculators. This leads with a problem as I start to explain and help them understand what they need to input into the calculator and they have different calculators. Some with non-working buttons. Help my classes get started right to their solving and these calculators make for an easier transition to higher math as they move forward.
