In order to incorporate opportunities for working with different types of pottery and glazing techniques, an updated kiln with the ability to perform properly and consistently allows students the opportunity to create more projects without any chance of a malfunction during the firing process. A new and improved kiln will allow students in classes other than just ceramics to create clay projects. Students are able to get their projects back faster and in a more timely manner than before and this kiln gives them the option to choose from a larger selection of glazes(the finished color). Due to the new kiln technology and consistency, the students' projects come out of the kiln with a more even color and are less likely to explode with the addition of specific firing functions. The Skutt KMT 1027 allows for less teacher-monitoring and adjusting, safer and more energy-efficient operation, is more accurate, and is easier to update or repair than our current equipment (technicians can remotely access machine data). From a teaching perspective, this kiln reduces the amount of time I would have to invest in the firing process. As an additional and amazing bonus, this kiln has the ability to be monitored and controlled remotely, via mobile device application, which opens up many evening and weekend opportunities to complete student projects.
