Using these stories will expand my students scope of what stories can or do look like. One of the reasons that this list -- Ghost in particular -- is so important to me, is that I was able to attend the 2019 TYA/USA Conference in Atlanta, GA where Ghost was presented as a staged adaptation from the Nashville Children's Theatre. One of the amazing things about this production was seeing the casting that included the need for an actor to be Black albino. It destroyed the idea that you "just can't find enough actors who look like x,y, or z." These stories involve meaningful, inspiring, and uplifting characters who do good, make complex choices, and rebel against oppression. By sharing these with students, I hope to help them engage with theatre curriculum in authentic ways. I also hope to inspire them to leave my classroom and go do good in the world.
