Students in K-3rd grade will be learning about counting and performing rhythms with the claves and drums. Students in 4th grade will be learning to play the soprano recorder, and will have the opportunity to keep their recorder to learn at home once completing music class. Learning to play an instrument has been proven through many studies and much research to increase a students memory, patience, confidence, discipline, time management, social, and critical thinking skills. Playing an instrument makes you smarter! Many studies show correlation between musical training and academic success. Learning to play an instrument stimulates the brain to improve functions like memory and abstract thinking, which are essential for all areas of academics. Playing an instrument also reduces stress and keeps you calm. In many cases listening to and playing music can lower ones heart rate and blood pressure. Music is also good for your heart and soul. Joining a musical group can expand a child's social circle, introduce them to new friends, and help them to build teamwork and leadership skills. Playing an instrument gives you a feeling of achievement, builds your confidence, improves your patience, and makes you a more creative person! Music, and learning to play an instrument, gives a student a lifetime's worth of skills. Music class supports the entire child in growing academically, socially, and emotionally. Music can be a game changer in a young person's life, and it has always been the most important subject to me. Students need music in their lives, and every child should be able to experience learning to play an instrument.
