I am a school based Occupational Therapist. I provide services to over 70 students in 14 different schools. My students have a wide range of needs and abilities. They also vary in age from preschool all the way through high school. When I go in a school to work with students it is necessary for me to pull them out of class and away from classroom instruction. Due to this I try to incorporate STEM learning activities into my therapy sessions. Stringing and/or sorting colors, animals, and shapes with different tongs, all helps to promote good hand strength and dexterity. I like to hide little animals in the thera puty. Students have so much fun finding and identifying them they forget they are actually working their hand muscles. Stacking and creating with interlocking beads is another fun activity. The Holidays are always a fun time to work with students. I am excited for the opportunity to incorporate some take-home Halloween and Christmas crafts that will focus on their motor skills. In addition to fine motor development I also provide sensory and feeding support for some of my students. I have several that require adapted feeding utensils and some that are able to focus on their STEM activities better with the aide of a chewy necklace. The golf pencils are great for students to use. I especially love the twist n write pencils, the loop scissors, and the pencil weights for students who do not apply enough pressure when they write. Many of these things I want to be able to leave with my students to continue using in their classrooms if I find it is helpful for them during our therapy session. I'm so excited to be able to provide so many new activities during therapy sessions this year!
