I want my students to see there are many different children and families all over the world. We have SO many things in common with people but the way they look may give us pause and hesitation to reach out and meet them. Reading books about diverse cultures will highlight our similarities hopefully bridging the divide that has been created in our current society. More than half of my students come from economically challenged households. We are a free and reduced lunch program school. Students need story examples of Perserverance and Over coming the odds! The students need to find a story that speaks to them. Identifying with a character in a book is powerful. After they've studied a story they often can express their thoughts and emotions with drawing a response.
