Returning to teaching in person during a time of social distancing and mask-wearing presents many opportunities to transform the way we have been teaching. Students and adults must protect themselves and each other by following new protocols in school. These new practices don't have to limit how creative and engaging our classroom environments can be. In an effort to give kids mask breaks and fresh air, the outdoor classroom is one answer. By providing space and comfortable seating children can extend the classroom to the outdoors. The grass is inviting to sit on, but after a short while the ground is hard and balancing materials can be a challenge. I am requesting some alternative seating for kids to sit and work after the initial exploration involved in an outdoor experiment, observation, reading, or demonstration so they can record, draw, or explain what they have learned.
