My students spend most of their day online facilitating their core and elective classes. Our alternative school does not support certain elective coursework in music. This lack of musical support can devolve into more destructive and pessimistic musical avenues. Having an in-school music program with ukuleles provides a learning piece that is missing. Music should be uplifting, and with teacher direction, we can accomplish this much needed and missing element. Struggling students need to positively express themselves. Having a robust ukulele program will stir imagination and creativity; improving the students' self-worth; and ultimately help to increase their academic achievement. The Ukulele has only four strings, is easy to play and sound great, and produces a comforting sound. For most students, this will be a new experience. Teaching students to stretch and expand their capabilities and talent will have lifelong rewards.
