I would like to gift a copy of the book "I Believe I Can" to each of our 1st graders while they continue to learn 100% virtually. My goal is to make a recording (with permission from HarperCollins to be shared on a closed platform) of the students reading it and sharing pictures as a class project. This book has had a profound impact on one of my 1st grade students. He expressed sadness to me over the first several weeks of school, saying "I am sad every day because I miss my mom. She went to prison and she chose to go back. I'm just so sad. We are all sad." I picked up the book while shopping one day with him in mind. "Like the hero, I am brave." When I showed him the book during a Google Meet, he said of your beautiful cover illustration, "that reminds me of me and my mom". The next day he didn't want to hang up from our Meet at the end of the day and asked, "Would you read me that book? It makes me feel better." We sent home additional supplies to our students this week, so I purchased a couple of extra copies, and I put stickers with his name on the cover so he would know it is his to keep. His face lit up with a bright smile when he saw that it was in his bag. We've read it together almost every day. Now he is starting to read the pages with me. Yesterday his comment after reading "the book" was "It's like I'm hearing my mom and my great-grandpa say these words to me." Hearing him share that was perhaps one of my finest moments as a human being.
