Due to the pandemic and coming back into the classroom, has changed the classroom environment drastically, especially for our early intervention students. Some interest areas/learning centers have had to be removed due to new protocol and procedures. Two of those major changes that were implemented to our rooms was moving furniture and taking the carpets up off of the floor due to the potential spread of germs. My classroom feels cold and not as warm as it did before with carpets featured on the floors in several surrounding areas. Carpets made my room feel warm, comfortable and cozy. Note: with carpet being removed form the floor, the students would have to sit on the bare floor. Not comfortable!! Another procedure that has been put into place was having the children to stand and sit spaced out during group lesson time. Having to abide by new protocols and procedures has some what restricted/limited our classroom, but being an Educator I was trying to think how can these limitations now become limited opportunities and before I new it I thought of carpet squares!! Several reasons why, they can be thrown into a washing machine very easy, unlike huge floor carpets, they are small for the children to manage during transition of taking them out of their cubbies to bringing them to their assigned sitting spot. More importantly they will be handled by one student at a time, kept in a specific area, accessible to that one particular student, and I can space them out according to the regulations set up for our class. Not to mention, they are educational!! I also would love to receive positive sayings and encouragement around our class to motivate positivity in a world that has so much going on the outside of our classroom walls.
